I've been wondering if we should have an activity drive or something.

Depravity threads are the reason I don't read most of the posts here. I keep thinking Eggfan might have gotten to a thread before I have and the risk isn't worth it.

If you admins have no problems with it then I'm not going to interfere.

I see your point we are petty much dead around here only the oldest members ever come here anymore. This is hard because if we start bending our rules for more activity we will get more idiots asking us to do stuff fucking blue hedgehog related then chaos will ensue (no pun intended) but if we keep to our old iron fisted ways we end up like this a forum thats barely on life support.

To make a long story short, nobody understands us and won't join. The question now is: How do we get more people to join without bending our ways?...

People come for the content, I would believe. However, the RSS I'm subscribed to for the X-Egg pages has been silent for months. I've tried my hardest to make incentives for contributions, but it hasn't happened. Plus, I have also suggested other ways to get people interested in the site again, like video walkthroughs of betas, but I don't have time to do anything with making them.

To paraphrase my post from the family forum:

Quote

I brought up this idea to #cult, and Gov seemed to think it was a good idea. First things first, if you don't know what I'm talking about, Let's Play! is a subforum in SomethingAwful's message board that is just people playing games for other people to watch. "So what?" you may say. It's got a huge following, and some of the videos are damn decent.

...

Obviously, we should lead this with Sonic 2 or something.

As far as I can tell, we're seen as the Ebaumsworld of the prototype community. We take stuff and don't give credit, a philosophy which I agree with, since discoveries are discoveries, most people forget their own discoveries let alone other people remembering them. But over recent years, people have gotten rather uppity about what's 'theirs' despite the fact all they do is scan a magazine article, not actually creating something new and having someone else get ad revenue for someone else's work. We seem to push away a lot of people because of this.

If you have any ideas for raising traffic outside of just starting a softcore pornography video-sharing website let us k-- Wait, I got it!

I frankly don't care if they don't like it because we strip watermarks. They take away from an image, and it's not their game. Even though I own two copies of Psychonauts that are pre-release, I wouldn't share the data as "mine". My name isn't in the credits for the game.

At the very most, we can give credit to the person who found it at the end. Something like "found by" and then a link to their "profile", which will link to their site, and their other discoveries cataloged on this site. But to block a clear view of someone else's work with your watermark is just being a douchebag. At least that's how we're different from eBaum's, we don't past our own logos over others, or claim that it's our property.

Unfourtunately, everyone that would be interested by the wiki are probably following that one instead:
http://wiki.rustedlogic.net
Which has grew incredibly fast and is still growing

Only thing we could do is start digging up into some games for beta materials ... Not that I'm one to talk since I know jackshit about all that. But that's the only solution I can think of right now. We're kind of stuck in a vicious cycle, nobody post anymore because no one is posting, and nobody new comes because it's dead.

I made a topic without even knowing it. D-CulT?...

Anyways, I do agree with IUG and SSUK prototype work isn't something that can be owned by one person and shouldn't be claimed as such theres only one group that can really own the content and thats the people who created it. I always hated that hoarding complex it ruins prototype research.

Mew has got a point too wiki's like TCRF are outdoing the X-egg by miles even though x-egg has a better design then just copying wikipedia like TCRF. What we need is something the other proto-wikis don't offer. a hard challenge if i say so...

I have been trying to keep up posting every now and then. Me and SSUK have been having a back and forth on the Halo: Reach differences topic. Once i get everything together i plan to update the X-CulT section.

I would advertise around, but I wouldn't know where to. None of my IRL friends give a shit about protos or anything, all of my online friends just go on Retro. It's quite the situation.

Methinks that inſtead of (or in addition to) the main, all-encompassing X-CulT ſite we ſhould rather create a network of ſubſites like Sonic CulT focusſing on ſpecific ſeries and franchises. We would probably get activity from fans of ſaid franchise, who I preſume would be more attracted to a dedicated and appropriately deſigned ſubſite than to a generic wiki where their games are only ones of many.

One thing that I've seen a lot of people hating on X-Cult for is exactly this -- pretty much outright taking of information others have found with no credit whatsoever.

I think you guys are on the wrong extreme. I'm with you on the idea that watermarks are retarded (and it's part of the policy on TCRF that intrusive watermarks are simply banned, period -- I don't have problems with ones in the margins as much), but the whole point is that someone had to take the time, or have the blind luck, to have a copy of the scan/make the discovery/anything else.

One thing I did for TCRF was to just add a guideline for giving credit where credit is due. For discoveries that aren't mine (or anybody else that doesn't want to add it), there is just a small "Source: Name", optionally with URL, appended to the end of the section. It's small and out of the way, yet lets people point and say "I found that."

Whereas with this, there's really no joy in contributing. You can't really say, "I was part of this", because it's just an anonymous data dumpster with no verification or source.

The requirements for people to not feel cheated out of what they've done are actually really small in practice, to the point where being a stickler and giving no credit at all is usually far worse than just letting them have a bit.

We try. Honestly, I'm quite surprised at how much it's gotten picked up... but I've noticed a few of my friends linking it around, which shows others, and so on... pretty surprising.

Well shucks, there was me thinking that the D-Cult stood for deprived Cult.

Nevertheless, since my Cryo-pissing-off-athon, I've reduced my personal #CulT activity 99% and forum time 90% so yaaaaaaaaaay.

Not that i'm missing much though. Phones, jaded sonic discussions, animu, japan, british stuff, rinse and repeat.

Dead-Cult. If there was another depravity thread, and that was the only activity, I'd unbookmark this site.

Well, I've been trying to add stuff here and there, add the latest from unseen64, ASSEMblerGames, and just general research, and my only little peevs are the lack of validation positions, and some login issues with the front page (Which I can get around for now, and I know are being worked on :P) It does make me just about want to cry that things have gotten to the point they have. We badly need activity, that's a fact, and honestly, the reason I can't ass myself to post on the forums is, as you say, activity. What we need are people interested in active research, passing ideas back and forth, a COMMUNITY again. There are a few things that need to get up off the ground that might help. Talk pages is a biggie. We could draw people in interested in game research on a specific game, and even if the rest of the forum scares them, their games talk-page could be their asylum, and what do you know, they might ease into the rest of the site? I dunno, I'm just spouting ideas, but hey, they can't be all bad.
