I was checking archive.org for old game crap, when on a whim I checked out the old X-Band site. It looks like it held up very well in archive form, so I figured I'd link this for history buffs, as well as for those of us who are old enough to remember it!

What? You could play Super Mario Kart online back then?

That sounds amazing, but I wonder how well this thing could keep synchronization between two remote systems...

I don't think you could to be honest. I think it was in their "maybe" pile.

Along with the videos in that profile (both his uploads and his favorites), there's a few other videos of interest as well. Most of the videos seem to, oddly enough, be from the Saturn Netlink (The US ones were likely easy to do because the Saturn Netlink can direct-connect to users without the need for a universal server, meaning that these can work even today. The Japanese ones? NicoNicoDouga archives -everything-.)

Japanese NicoNIcoDouga seems to have some videos that may be of interest as well - in particular a video of SFC Puyo Puyo on Xband. I'm snaging it now.

These are all four videos currently up on NicoNicoDouga with the "XBAND" tag and/or search term.

The most important one is the SFC Puyo Puyo one as it's currently the only video archival of the Japanese SFC XBand.

Short paragraph from a 1994 issue of Popular Science that tells how they overcame the synchronization issues. The only time lag was bad was when one player had a phone call coming in. Other than that, it was rather decent for the technology it had.

It was lame. If you plugged Zelda ALttP into your Xband, this atari 2600-like maze game came up, and you could play against other people.

Some gameplay of that might be interesting to see. Other than that, some other videos I might want to look out for are for actual Genesis Netplay, and archivals of annoouncements/events/news/convos.

Correct, nothing Zelda related at all.

I haven't been able to find much SNES or Genesis Netplay online so far. I've been slowly emailing people that used to be on Xband to see if they have any VHS footage of their matches. I'll find something after awhile.

By announcements/events/news/convos, are you referring to static media or footage?

You want actual modems? Give me a few days, I'll send out emails to all of the people that I used to know on Xband and see if any of them still have modems that they'd be willing to part with for free.
