After looking through a YouTube video, I can say that these are, indeed, some unused sprites!

If you've paid attention in this game, there's absolutely no sign of the infamous Charlie Brown at all. However, if you look through the ROM in an image editor, such as Tile Layer Pro...

Well look who we have here! It's good ol' Charlie Brown himself! I also re-colored the sprites to look more Charlie Brown-ish in Tile Layer Pro. This is by no means what his in-game palette would've looked like, it's just colored using his colors so you can see it better.

Now the thing is, his tile set here is mixed in among the tile set for the Pogo event. Judging from his sprites here, it seems he was intended to be at the end of the course waiting for Snoopy or Spike. He could've possibly showed up in other events too, but his role is rather uncertain. I think he might have used Woodstock's palette, judging from the fact the two have similar coloring and it would've made sense just to lazily slap that on there for him and call it good.

Another thing that points this to being unused is that in the Japanese remake, "Donald Duck", where Charlie Brown is in the USA edition has been completely wiped out and some Japanese characters have been put in, which I have no idea what it means. Looking at Wikipedia, the article says that the Donald Duck game came first, but since there's no sources cited on that article, and the fact that Wikipedia can have wrong information posted at any time (or someone writing "lol big tits r funny"), I don't trust it as a legit source right now.

Again, there's other stuff in the ROM that intrigues me that I've never seen, but I'll come back to it once I've done a little more research and show them off to you as I find out what's up.

It looks like he's flipping you off in the second image, and then he's so smug about it. That's why the guy got cut, sore loser.
Rick L
You know what, you're right. I never noticed until now!

Anyway, another unused piece!

A picture of Snoopy on a bike lumped into some of the intro sprites and title screen artwork. This suggests it might've been used on the title screen at one time, but we got the Snoopy in the weird bow tie art instead. No idea what colors this would've used.

I actually owned this game when I was a kid

and it was pretty hard

Just for those who don't know, this game was just a remake of Alternative World Games.

Perhaps somebody could check that one out and see if there's somebody at the finish line in that race?
Rick L
Not a bad idea. What's this game for anyway? I think I missed it in looking at it.

It was released for the C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Atari ST, originally. No idea which was the first version in development, though.

OK, for the first time, on the Charlie Brown sprite, I think I've noticed something here.

On one of the side views (the second one, that's positioned a little higher than the others), is it me, or does it look like he's carrying a torch?

Uh, isn't that Spike jumping/falling off his Po-go Stick?
Rick L
Ah, crap. You're right, my bad.

That'll teach me to look into something at 2:30 in the morning. =/
