I got this prototype of Super Mario Kart a couple of months ago from c4e's huge proto sale. It turned out to be a quite early version with many graphical and musical differences, for example a totally different Vanilla Lake soundtrack that Niels discovered the day before he would ship it out to me =). I've also noticed many gameplay differences which sometimes make it harder than the released version. Anyway, I thought I'd share some pics for those of you who might be interested.

Close to the Japanese title screen. From what I can see, Mario's mouth looks slightly different.

Mario and Luigi have additional parts on the back of their karts and Bowser looks a little different.

Cup Select screen is missing the orange border and the "cc" class chosen.

Lakitu makes a different noise when driving in the opposite direction and the yellow flag is missing the black cross.

Beta Cheep Cheep?

Sometimes it says "OUT" for some players in the bottom.

When getting in 2nd place, a Super Koopa makes a loop and starts spinning out of the screen when it gets hit by the champagne cork. Also, there are no cups given as reward.

There are lots of other differences I've seen as well and it's seriously buggy in some places. I haven't had time to fully play it through yet, but hopefully I'll be able to do it soon.

It'd be really nice to either get a ROM dump or some higher quality screenshots of this, as well as recordings of musical differences.
Tweaker
Awesome! And yeah, I second the call for a ROM dump. I'm particularly interested in the musical differences--maybe the samples don't blow chunks in this build? =P
Turbohog
Yes, a rom dump would win. It'd be really interesting.
Phugolz
Don't expect a dump of it. The folks at digitalhordepress don't think like we do. We're into this for the historical and preservation half of it. They're into bumping up their internet fame/ego. =\
Eric Wright
if we get our hands on it, I've got an SNES rom copier.

me too =)

How about you fork the money over for it instead of begging for free dumps. I mean, it was pretty public news that this thing was being sold.

Oh wait, wrong forum lol.

Pach, what do you have? Ive got the Super UFO Pro 8 32Mbit... it seems to handle everything I throw at it along with the aid of uCON64... is there a definitive "best" one out there?

And lemme know if you come across a 32Mbit Super Magic Drive, or the upgrade at least :P Im still looking
drx
I have a couple 16M Super Magic Drives if you're interested.
rika_chou
drx, you know much about genesis ROM dumpers? I have a "Mega Beckup" that I was never able to get working, I'm not sure if I'm using it wrong or it's broken. I think it's some kind of version of the "Mega Disk".

I'll trade you my snes copier for a smd

Speaking of dumpers, I remember seeing a guide on how to make your own once. Does anyone know where I can find that?
Eric Wright
drx: my SMD is 24mbit, but how much would you want for one of the 16mbit ones? I might be able to de-solder the ram chip and put it on the little circuit board in mine because it has a spot for one more.

Moar Puddin: You might mean the one by Cyan Helkaraxe.. I don't know if the guides are online anymore, but I've got them somewhere on an old computer. it was a bitch to build, but it worked. Nothing really special about it though, it blindly addressed 4mb (32mbit) of data and recorded the response from its request. "commercial" rom copiers from honk kong and shit at least let you play roms on the actual hardware (so do flash carts if you happened to pick any of those up)
