I didn't see this on the site or the forum, so: in the beta screenshots to Donkey Kong 64, the cartoony fruit-based weapons are instead realistic firearms. Fun.
I'm thinking these were just placeholders; Nintendo probably wouldn't let Rare release a DK game with guns, even if they fit the jungle-explorer archetype.

Indeed, it's as if they were models ported to Unreal Tournament or Quake or Halo and so on. Just doesn't fit with the characters.

i'd imagine they would have just taken the models striaght out of goldeneye/perfect dark (the first screen suggests it was made by rare), instead of making new assets they were probably going to replace
