http://rapidshare.com/files/133168368/x360...hboard.rar.htmlThis is apparently the new Dashboard update for the Xbox 360, the one with avatars and so forth. I say apparently because I cannot be sure that this is the real deal, however it looks real. You cannot install it on normal consoles, although so far I haven't tried to update my 360 in fear of bricking it, but either way others have already said that they've had no luck installing it.
One person has apparently had some luck installing it:
http://xhavok87.wordpress.com/2008/07/26/x...oard-08-leaked/From what I can gather, the update calls home to Microsoft to check your console ID against their databases. Of course, your console ID isn't on that list and it tells you to piss off. But hey, at least it looks like we got some (useless) prototype software. It's something.

and there is no way to change or mask this ID, I'm assuming?

from the screenies, it looks like a bunch of corrupted shite, so im going to hold out for the real deal.
it would be cool if a custom dashboard could be engineered from this

Looks like he removed it. Either MS and their lawyers stepped in or it was a lie and he removed it after everyone found out.

360 update today. Nothing cosmetically changed, but from what microsoft states "It's putting the cogs into place awaiting further instruction" aka, doing the big up date in lots of little ones, then initiating them all at once at some random, undertermined point.

Since we're getting closer to update-day, Microsoft will start rolling out updates to their servers and internal architecture to help serve the new dashboard (as in serve it content, not serve the actual update itself).
The update could be a week or two away... Even though 'Fall' doesn't occur until September 22nd...

At Currys, we've been told we're receiving the "New Xbox" a week tomorrow (Friday 15th), but that we're not to open the package and sell them until we receive instructions and more info from head office. Presumably that's the new dashboard?

It's probably just the new 60GB 360 model, as khorey said. Though it might have the new dashboard already installed on it for all we know. It should tell you the hard drive size on the system's box; that is, if you can see it and the system boxes aren't still sealed away in a bigger box that was used to ship them (and by the sounds of it, they are.)
Microsoft / the store's head office are probably telling you not to touch it since the street date for release hasn't arrived yet, but there's a slight chance it might also be a measure against leaking the new dashboard early. Of course, once a piece of hardware or software makes it out of the factory, a few always get leaked early...

and make sure to wait another month after the street date just to give it the 'shafted europe market' effect
i doubt the fall update will be pre-loaded, it's not even close yet

Well, I wouldn't complain too much about Microsoft's approach to Europe. Out of all consoles I've owned, I feel less fucked over about owning my 360 and being in a PAL region then say... The Wii. Fuck Nintendo.
But I digress, we wont be getting the fall update with the 60GB 360s. If we do, then expect a less than finished version. As I said, Fall doesn't land until September 22nd. GAME just sent me an email saying they'll sell the 60GB 360s on August 29th. However, points in our defence is that Microsoft have said the dashboard update is aimed towards the European market. Would explain the delay. But lets be realistic, it's not.

I would say they're aiming it at European Markets due to the un-challenged Mii system of Nintendo being such a break through for video games. I'm not attempting to jump on the bandwagon of "Lol Microsoft steal Nintendo's idea cause they suckkkkk", but Microsoft are a very strategic and well managed(lol) marketing company that will always aim to please crowds of the latest craze. That's how they even jumped on the Gaming market, due to seeing the popularity of Nintendo and Sony doing so well, and with Sega admitting defeat, immediately left an opening for something new to be added to the current market. Cue Xbox.

Actually I'd call the Avatar system a cross between Mii and what Sony is doing with Home...

Ah yes, the 60GB version. I recall reading about that a bit ago, but it'd totally slipped my mind.

Wasn't there going to be a price cut to the 120GB hard drive, too? Or did I read that in my head?
Still, nice to know when the 60GB is out.

They really should. 100 bucks for another 60 gigs now?
